Aetna Ambulance Celebrates 75 Years

Aetna Ambulance Service is extremely honored to be celebrating 75 years of service in the city of Hartford. Founded in 1945 by Howard and Herman Grady, Aetna Ambulance arose in response to the Ringling Brothers Circus fire that occurred in Hartford on July 6, 1944, claiming 138 souls.

The Grady Family was deeply moved by the loss of life as a result of this catastrophe, therefore they recognized a need for a full-time ambulance company. It is very likely that given the expanse of this tragedy, the community wanted to prevent it from ever happening again. Aetna Ambulance was started and was run out of the Grady family home and the flower shop on Wethersfield Avenue. It was common for the Grady gentlemen to be called out of family events, holiday dinners, and in the middle of bad weather or snowstorms to assist the local residents. They felt a very deep desire to help others in need, so they also went out into the community to teach first aid classes as well as sitting on the EMS Advisory board.

Now that being said, much has happened in the past 75 years, even the last 15 years. We would not be here today if it wasn’t for our dedicated employees. It is a point of pride for Aetna employees that the company has such a rich history.

Happy Birthday Aetna Ambulance Service

ASM Holds First ACLS Experienced Provider Class!

The American Heart Association recently released an updated ACLS Experienced Provider curriculum. This program allows experienced paramedics to further expand their clinical knowledge using group discussion and research to “solve” cases presented to them. The course requires participants to pass a written exam and 3 practical stations. The class then moves onto the advanced content, which includes: Toxicology cases, Metabolic disturbances, Post-Resuscitation care, and complex Respiratory cases. This is the first time ASM has offered the program, and it was well-received by everyone involved. ASM plans on 2 more of these classes in 2020. See our website for details!

HARTFORD, Conn. – When Aetna Ambulance EMT Ray Berwick realized his partner Chris Cabral was suffering a stroke last month, he quickly rushed his partner to Hartford Hospital, where the trauma team immediately operated on Cabral.

Cabral had a blood clot near his carotid artery, according to WTIC.

Cabral said suffering the stroke while in the ambulance was a bit like winning the lottery.

“He recognized something wasn’t right,” Cabral said of his partner Berwick. “I was inches away from dying and my partner saved my life.”

Berwick has been working alongside Cabral for the past two and a half years.

“Just seeing him walking around and knowing how lucky it is, it’s awesome,” he said.

In a ceremony Berwick was recognized for his quick thinking, along with the team at Hartford Hospital.

“The role that first responders play is truly, truly lifesaving,” said Jeffrey Flaks, the president of Hartford Healthcare, at the ceremony.

Cabral is undergoing physical therapy but Hartford Hospital neurologists said they expect him to make a full recovery. Cabral noted he hopes to be riding with Berwick in their ambulance again sometime in the spring.

For 22 years, troopers from Troop H of the Connecticut State Police have been as busy as Santa’s elves carrying out their December Toy Drive.

With assistance from Ambulance Service of Manchester (ASM) and Aetna Ambulance, the troopers have collected more than half a million toys and more than $200,000 in donations to benefit children who find themselves in the Emergency Department at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center during the holidays and throughout the year.

Children who have to visit Connecticut Children’s can be overwhelmed with the unknown. Toys collected by the State Police provide a welcome distraction to children and help encourage communication between a care provider and patient. Making a donation today helps provide smiles all year long. Sometimes a toy can be the one thing a child remembers about their visit – a memory you can create.
