Meet the Newest Members of the Team: Aetna Hires Four – 2016

HARTFORD — On February 10, 2016 two EMTs and two Paramedics were added to the Aetna team. As part of our continued growth Aetna and ASM seek out only the best candidates. We look for employees who are focused on high-quality patient care, are team oriented and conduct themselves in a professional manner. During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Brigid Cox:   FULL TIME, EMT.  My name is Brigid Cox, I am 22 years old, and I am from South Windsor. I graduated in May from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.  I earned my B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Anatomy and Physiology. I have always wanted to work in the medical field. Within the last couple of years I finally decided that I wanted to be a Physician’s Assistant.  I am interested in emergency medicine, making EMS a perfect way for me to work towards my career goals. I like spending my free time outdoors; hiking, camping, or swimming and I would really like to start rock climbing.  I also love traveling and trying new things, especially different foods. I am really excited to be starting my first job in the medical field and to finally be able to help out my community.

Kyle Durand:     FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Kyle Durand, I am 22 years old and I am from Bristol, CT. I graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology & Neurobiology. After graduation I enrolled in an EMT program in South Windsor and obtained my license in October of 2015. I originally attended UConn with the goal of graduating with a Bachelors in Fine Arts in acting, as my career goal at the time was filmmaking. While filmmaking is still a very passionate hobby of mine, my interests shifted to the medical field my first semester after I attended a Neurobiology lecture. Since then I have been enamored with the medical field, having worked for the St. Francis Radiology Department, volunteering for Americorps in Willimantic, and helping research genomic markers for familial disorders and diseases. In my spare time I like to play football, rock climb, go hiking, learn a new language and travel as much as possible. I could not be happier to work for Aetna as an EMT and help make a difference in the community I live in. The experience I gain working for Aetna Ambulance will be an invaluable asset to my future career goals and myself. I’m very excited to be a part of the Aetna Ambulance team and all of the new opportunities that lie ahead.

Dan Hope:    FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Dan Hope and I am 28 years old. As a recent graduate of the Capital Community College Paramedic Program. I am excited to join the team of EMTs and Paramedics at Aetna Ambulance. As a resident of Monson, Massachusetts, I have worked full and part time as an EMT-Basic for both private ambulance and municipal Fire Department services. After working mostly service-based jobs since high school, I have discovered a true passion for EMS since 2013 and have dedicated much of my time to improving my skills and knowledge base as a field provider. In my spare time, I am an avid hiker and enjoy traveling. I look forward to beginning my career in paramedicine with Aetna Ambulance.   

Amanda Kneipfer:    FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Amanda Kneipfer and I am 23 years old, originally from Wallingford, CT. I graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in 2014 with a degree in Child Development and a minor in Psychology. While in college, I studied abroad for a semester in Madrid and travelled to four other countries during my time there. I love to travel and have been to nine different countries to date. I originally thought that I wanted to go to grad school to become a Social Worker, but quickly found a passion for EMS after taking my EMT course. I have been volunteering for Wethersfield Ambulance for a little over a year, and just completed the paramedic program through New Britain EMS Academy. I am very excited for the opportunity to be a part of the Aetna team and can’t wait to meet and work with everyone!

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s Joshua Pearson Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD –  As of December 19, 2015, Aetna’s Joshua Pearson has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves.

Josh started at Aetna in April of 2013 and graduated from the Paramedic Studies Program at Capital Community College. His preceptor was Paramedic and Field Supervisor Matt Campbell. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field. Josh served in the United States Navy for four years.

As with all precepting phases at Aetna, Josh’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing him and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls.

On behalf of the Aetna Family, we would like to wish Josh the best of luck and say we are very proud to have such skilled professionals on staff.

Aetna’s Matt Campbell Promoted to Field Supervisor

Matt Campbell AHARTFORD — On December 4, 2015 Aetna’s Matt Campbell was promoted to the position of Field Supervisor.

According to Matt, “I have been with Aetna Ambulance since September 2011 and have enjoyed every day coming to work since.  I have been in EMS since 2007 and have not looked back. I started out my career in Boston at a private service. When I realized that I love this job and wanted to become a Paramedic, I enrolled in Paramedic classes at Comprehensive Medical Teaching Institute (CMTI).

“When I was in school I met my wife while she was attending college in Boston. We now have a family that is growing very fast. My wife and I have a two year old boy and are now expecting twin girls. I have been a Paramedic for over six years now. I became a preceptor for Aetna in early 2012. I am very exited to work with all my colleagues in my new position as Field Supervisor. Aetna is in a true fashion is a family; we stick side-by-side and work day-by-day together. I work with the highest level of professionals In the business every day.  I want to thank all of my Aetna family for all of your support. Let’s wish and hope for further success in our careers together.”

We look for employees who are focused on high-quality patient care, are team oriented and conduct themselves in a professional manner. During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Amy Bastien:   FULL TIME, EMT. Hi, my name is Amy Bastien, I’m 27 years old, and I live in New Britain, CT. I graduated from UMass Amherst in 2010 with a B.S. in Business Management. After college, I spent a few years traveling and living abroad. In that time, I learned a lot about myself volunteering at clinics in underserved populations, and began to feel compelled to help those who cannot help themselves. It is my hope to gain as much experience as possible as an EMT with Aetna, in order to proceed to a physician assistant program. It is my life goal to continue on a path of providing comfort and care to those in need. In my spare time, I hang out with my dog, play co-ed soccer, and train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Team Link. I am greatly looking forward to working with Aetna and am very thankful for the opportunity to do so.

Melissa Bilgen:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Melissa and I am 26 years old. Born in Hartford, CT but holding dual citizenship in Turkey. I graduated from UCONN Storrs in 2012 with a B.A. in Biology and minor in Anthropology. I joined the Army National Guard in 2013. I am currently a 68W, Combat Medic, in the 102d Infantry. I am one of two females integrated into the Infantry Unit which is exciting. Ever since I became a Combat Medic I always knew I wanted a career in the medical field. The way the human body works and reacts to things is fascinating to me. I also want to keep my skills set up if I deploy. I strive to one day be a paramedic. In my free time I am very much into fitness. My favorite classes are Core, HIIT, and Yoga.

Michael Bouley:    FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Michael Bouley, I am 29 years old and I am originally from Manchester, CT, presently living in Tolland, CT. After high school I attended Central Connecticut State University, studying a broad number of subjects, primarily western philosophy and sociology. I took my EMT course through Hartford Hospital, and absolutely loved the unique experience, and the opportunity to help people that EMS affords. I have been a volunteer EMT with Windsor EMS for the last three years, and particularly enjoyed the responsibility of being a field training officer teaching new EMTs. I recently graduated from the Capital Community College Paramedic program, and I am very excited to begin my career as a part of the Aetna Ambulance team and to further my knowledge and experience in the field. In my spare time I like hiking with my two dogs, camping, painting miniatures, and playing video games, I am an avid reader, and love learning about history, philosophy, and science. I look forward to working for a company that has such a strong reputation, and hope to meet everyone soon!

Tessa Gilbert:  FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Tessa Gilbert, I am 25 years old and currently live in Ledyard, CT. When I was younger my dad was in the military so I have lived many places on the East Coast as well as in Alaska. I have been in commercial EMS for a company in Norwich for two years.  I started in EMS after graduating from UCONN with a Psychology degree and really enjoyed many aspects of the job. I decided after about five months in EMS that I enjoyed it so much that I enrolled and am about to complete the Paramedic Program at Goodwin College. When I am not working or in class I like to work out and stay active. This includes hiking, swimming, completing Tough Mudders, volleyball, soccer, traveling, and paddle boarding. I mostly try to stay in good shape since I also really enjoy eating and trying new restaurants/food. I also enjoy watching movies and Netflix binging.  I aspire to eventually become a flight medic and one day a CRNA. I am really excited to begin working and expanding my skills and experience with Aetna.

Ryan Sullivan:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Ryan Sullivan and I am 22 years old. I graduated from UCONN in May 2015, with a major in molecular and cell biology and a minor in math. As an undergraduate I thought I wanted to pursue research as a career. But after working in chemical engineering, allied health, and epigenetic labs, I realized that research was not for me. In my final semester I took an EMT training course that UCONN offered, just because I thought it would be fun. I really enjoyed the course and after graduating, I knew I wanted to stick with it. Now I am very interested in the medical field, and I hope to one day go to medical school. In my free time I like to play video games, hang out with friends, and scuba dive. I also want to pick up skydiving as a hobby. I am looking forward to working with everyone at Aetna Ambulance, and I hope my time here will be the start to a great career in medicine.

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s Eric Thepsiri Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD –  As of August 21, 2015, Aetna’s Eric Thepsiri has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves.

Eric started at Aetna in March of 2015 and graduated from the Hartford Hospital-Goodwin College Paramedic Program. His preceptor was Paramedic Matt Campbell. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field. Eric started in EMS at 16.  He is currently continuing his education at UConn with an eye towards medical school.

As with all precepting phases at Aetna, Eric’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing him and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls.

During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Mark Correa:    FULL TIME, EMT. Hello my name is Mark Correa and I am a 23 year old currently residing in Springfield, MA. I have been an EMT in Springfield since 2011 and I take great pride in the work and care I provide to each patient with which I interact. I’ve worked as lifeguard for  seven years, a Dialysis Technician and an EMT at semi-pro football games. This allows me ample opportunity to work with those in need. I am currently in school working on a Bachelors of Science in Fire Science with an ultimate goal of becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic. I like to be active, I’m a sports guy, and I play semi-pro football as well as being an EMT at the games. I am excited and grateful for this new opportunity. 

Kelsey Gross:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Kelsey Gross.  I am 22 years old and live in Manchester, Connecticut.  For the first two years of my college career I attended the University of Wilmington in North Carolina, and then transferred back to my hometown of Storrs to finish obtaining my degree.  This past May I graduated from UCONN Storrs Campus with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology.  My interest in the field of emergency care began when I took an EMT course at UCONN during fall of my Junior year, as well as when I shadowed my pediatrician throughout my summers in college.  In the future I plan on attending a Physician Assistant program in the hopes of becoming a pediatric Physician Assistant, thus combining my love of children and of the medical field.  Before joining Aetna I worked in a childcare center during the week as well as at a winery on the weekends.  In my spare time I enjoy hiking, playing volleyball, and traveling.  In addition, one of my favorite activities is playing with one of my many dogs; right now there are 5 in my house!  I am very excited to join the Aetna family, and cannot wait to meet all of my fellow coworkers!

Ariel Mazara:     FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Ariel Mazara, I am 29 years old and currently live in Bristol, CT. I grew up in Queens, New York. While in high school, I joined multiple Volunteer Ambulance Companies, the Manhasset-Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department and was a founding member of Medical Explorer Post # 7380. At the age of 16 I became a New York State Certified First Responder (NYS CFR), later becoming an EMT at the age of 18. After working several different jobs ranging from afterschool programs, to a private non-emergency transport company, to being a supervisor for the Starbucks Coffee Company I enlisted in the Marine Corps. I served four and a half years as an intelligence analyst specializing in legal compliance and oversight. While on active duty I graduated from Excelsior College with an Associates of Science in Liberal Arts in January of 2015. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice.

Brianna Middel:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Bri Middel and I’m from East Lyme, Connecticut. I am 24 years old and I graduated from Springfield College in 2013 with a degree in Biology. I hope to attend Nursing or Physician’s Assistant graduate school in the future, with hopes of becoming a cardiac perfusionist eventually. In my spare time, I love to be outdoors, whether it is to run, hike, kayak, or travel somewhere new. I love meeting new people, and I’m excited to be a part of such a great team!

David O’Brien:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is David O’Brien and I recently became an Emergency Medical Technician. This past year I have dedicated myself to changing my career to helping others. I enrolled in an EMT course, became a volunteer firefighter and a substitute teacher all since February of 2015. My background includes 18 years of working in warehouse and transportation settings and through those settings I have learned that my heart truly yearns to helping others. I graduated from Northeastern University with an Athletic Training degree and during my time at Northeastern I was assigned to the Tuft University Athletic Training room; NU AT room; and both the NU basketball and football teams. I also did a co-op at Natick High School as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. I pride myself on being a results oriented, hands-on individual. During my time in Operations, I realized that because my management style strongly emphasizes communication and the principles of team building, I want to get back to helping others. Within Aetna I feel that I will be a valued addition to the team. I continue to train as a Triathlete, having completed the REV3 a few years ago, and I maintain a healthy lifestyle with a wonderful wife and three active children.

Roberto Rizza:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Roberto Rizza. I’m 38 years old and from Meriden. I studied Criminal Justice in college and shortly after I obtained a career as a Correctional Officer for 12 years. I pursued my education at Wolcott Fire School where I received a Firefighter-I certification. I then completed an EMT course in which I also received a certification. I have been a South Meriden Firefighter Volunteer for the past three years. I’ve always had a passion for helping those in need especially with quick response in emergent situations and most importantly, in saving lives. In my spare time, I enjoy going for a run, working-out, playing sports, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, and spending time with my family. I also speak Italian. My parents were born in Italy and came here for better opportunities. I’ve been brought up with a strong work-ethic and ambition to achieve my goals. I am thankful and look forward to this opportunity.

Blake St. John:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Blake St. John and I am 29 years old. I reside in Vernon, CT and have spent most of my life in the Hartford area. I got my start in emergency services with the Town of Vernon Fire Department in 2006. I was instantly hooked and knew I had found my calling. I have been a fully active member ever since. All the while, I maintained full time employment while concurrently working towards my degree from CCSU in New Britain. I have been employed full time in the Information Technology field since 2007 and with the same firm since 2008; a great software company located in the Hartford area. In my time in the Town of Vernon, I was inspired and encouraged to take on new roles and responsibilities, the latest of those was my EMT certification. For a long time I had assisted at EMS calls from the periphery and was excited about the opportunity to “get in there” and perform my own patient care. I attended the New Britain EMS Academy in 2013 and certified as an EMT in 2014. While precepting in New Britain, I learned a ton of information, met a great group of people, and immediately became hooked on EMS. A while after completing my program, I started volunteering as a primary technician with Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps; another great EMS organization and a great group of people who I enjoy working with. In my time volunteering with EVAC, I found that EMS was definitely where I wanted to be. For the first time in my life, I am following my heart into a career path rather than my wallet. I am very excited to be able to turn my part time volunteer vocation into a full time career at Aetna Ambulance.

Tomasz Sopel:    PART TIME, EMT. I am a 23 year pre-med student at UConn pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Physiology and Neurobiology. Born in Leżajsk, Poland, I came to the United States when I was three years old and have lived in Connecticut ever since. I completed my training with Bristol Hospital EMS and have experience working with the Town of Newington. It’s always been my life goal to learn as much as possible about the human body and to use that knowledge to save lives, so becoming an EMT was a perfect decision for me. I take my studies seriously; as I’m work towards an ultimate career in neurosurgery. In my time away from the books I like to train martial arts and compete in a few competitions throughout the year. I welcome any kind of new experience, be it skydiving, cliff jumping, week long hiking trips, I love experiencing new things and adapting to challenges in real time. Knowing this, I do my best every day to learn and grow from these day to day challenges so I can be the best version of myself I can be, both in the uniform and out. I am very eager to use this mentality to learn and grow with everyone at Aetna!

Bethany Sullivan:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Bethany Sullivan, I am 22 years old and I grew up in Bolton, Connecticut.  I graduated from UConn in 2015 with a double major in Pathobiology and Animal Science and a minor in Molecular and Cell Biology.  I began riding horses at the age of four and I have my own horse that I train and ride almost every day.  In college, I enjoyed being on the UConn Equestrian Team and was also part of a research team conducting genetics and muscle biology research as part of two broader studies at the university.   During this time, I also worked as a veterinary technician at a local equine practice and enjoyed helping treating horses in both emergency and primary care.  These experiences actually helped foster my pursuit of human medicine.  In 2014, I received my EMT certification from Hartford Hospital and I am now an EMT on-call with the Bolton Fire Department.  I enjoy the human interaction and ability to help people in need.  Presently, I am taking a year off while applying to medical school, and am excited to be part of Aetna Ambulance!

Tom Winterbottom:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Tom Winterbottom and I am 22 years old. I am from Burlington, Connecticut where I’ve lived for most of my life. I graduated from The University of Connecticut in May 2015 with a bachelors degree in Communication. I have been a volunteer firefighter in Burlington since 2010 and received some firefighting certifications. This past summer I decided to take the EMT course through Bristol Hospital and start my EMS career. In my free time I enjoy volunteering at the fire house and training with my friends. I also enjoy doing anything outdoors such as hiking, fishing, and water sports. In my future I wish to become a career firefighter or a paramedic. I look forward to meeting you all and I am proud to be apart of Aetna’s team!

Joe started at Aetna as an EMT-Basic in October of 2009 and graduated from the Hartford Hospital-Goodwin College Paramedic Program. His preceptor was Paramedic Jennifer Pasquale. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field.

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s Christopher Willey Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD –  As of June 5, 2015, Aetna’s Christopher Willey has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves.

Chris started at Aetna as an EMT-Basic in November of 2014 and graduated from the Hartford Hospital-Goodwin College Paramedic Program. His preceptor was Paramedic Matthew Campbell. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field.

Originally from New Jersey, Chris moved to Killingworth at age fourteen and moved to Manchester after college. He went to the University of Connecticut for Psychology and Anthropology.

As with all precepting phases at Aetna, Chris’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing him and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls.

HARTFORD — On May 8, 2015 Aetna’s David Kemp and Michael Pacheco were both promoted to the position of Field Supervisor.

Dave has been involved in EMS for the past eight years as an EMT, AEMT and now a paramedic. He has been working for Aetna Ambulance the last two years as a paramedic, and served the past three years as the Deputy Chief of EMS for the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department.

According to Mike, he got his start in EMS in 2007 and has been employed by Aetna Ambulance since 2008. He graduated from the Capitol Community College Paramedic program in 2013.

On behalf of the Aetna family we would like to congratulate David and Mike on their promotion and look forward to great things from and for them.

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s Juan Rodriguez Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD –  As of April 16, 2015, Aetna’s Juan “J” Rodriguez has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves.

J started at Aetna as an EMT-Basic in March of 2010 and graduated from the Hartford Hospital-Goodwin College Paramedic Program. His preceptor was Paramedic Kevin Stock. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field.

As with all precepting phases at Aetna, J’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing him and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls.

HARTFORD — On March 27, 2015 seven EMTs and two Paramedics were added to the Aetna team. As part of our continued growth Aetna and ASM seek out only the best candidates. We look for employees who are focused on high-quality patient care, are team oriented and conduct themselves in a professional manner. During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Raymond Berwick:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Raymond Berwick and I am 21 years old. I currently live in Ellington, Connecticut. I was born in Vernon but moved from Connecticut to North Carolina at a young age and then on to Mississippi. I eventually ended up finishing out my high school years at Rockville High School, right here in Connecticut. As soon as I could hold a hammer I was building various things with my father. Naturally after high school I quickly became a carpenter. I joined the United States Army Reserve which is where I has my first contact with emergency medicine. I took a “combat life saver course” and immediately knew I loved it. Just the thought of helping people on one of the worst days of their life. Or the possibility of maybe one day being able to save one of my brothers or sisters in arms is amazing. I run a “small time hobby farm” which includes around 30 chickens and a few pigs. In my spare time I enjoy hunting, fishing, backpacking and camping. I cannot wait to explore this new chapter of my life and I am counting down the days until orientation.

Israel Cardona:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Israel Cardona Jr. and I am 23 years old. I was born and raised in Hartford, CT. I received my GED with Honors in 2011 and then graduated from Lincoln Technical Institute in New Britain for Medical Assisting. Since then I have worked for both U.S Security Associates and Allied Barton Security Services for the past two years now. I have worked primarily as security for the Phoenix Life Insurance company in Downtown Hartford. I started as a part-time third shift officer and I was fortunate enough to land a supervisor position within a year. While working at the Phoenix I attended the EMT-Basic course at Code One Solutions in East Hartford which was a great experience and made my decision to be an EMT one I would not regret. I went for my EMT-B certification because I love the challenges that the EMS field faces and know that it is a career that would always push me to learn more. Although I will miss my friends and coworkers at the Phoenix I look forward to working alongside the Aetna Ambulance staff for many years to come. Within the next year I hope to attend paramedic school to further my knowledge in the EMS field.

Joseph Kosswig:     FULL TIME, EMT. Hello my Name is Joseph Kosswig, I am 23 years old and from Plainville, CT. About five years ago years ago I joined the Volunteer Fire Department in Plainville. When I started there I completed fire school and loved helping people in their time of need. I enjoyed it so much I decided to continue my education and took an EMT-B course at New Britain EMS Academy. It was a fast course, full time over a span of a six week period in the Summer of 2013. During the time of this course I began to take on as much ride time with New Britain EMS as I possibly could, as a student. I loved helping the patients and knew I wanted to continue my career. During this time I have also been enlisted in the CT Army National Guard, serving as part of the Charlie Company in the 1-102 INF. I have been in the military for about five years now in which I have taken on the responsibilities of a Team Leader. I have also completed a couple of military courses such as Army Mountain Warfare School and Warriors Leadership Course. I have been a student at Tunxis Community College for a few semesters now and have only eight classes to finish my degree. I plan on finishing my degree and hopefully one day I become a Paramedic. I look forward to starting my career at Aetna Ambulance and becoming part of the greatest team.

Muath Omari:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Muath Omari, I am 27 years old. I am newly married and having my first born son this year. I thank Aetna for giving me the chance to start my new life with a wonderful new career with their company. I love helping people and love the emergency medical field. I am grew up in the streets of NYC most of my life. CT is my new home for my new family. I have work hard to achieve my goals. I have struggled through many obstacles in life to get to where I am today and plan to finish school as a paramedic. My life has changed for the better, but the man who loves football and cars will never change. Now I will look forward about teaching my son about all the things I learned in life and loved in life. Thank you to everyone at Aetna who believed in giving me a chance.

Dennis Pelletier:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Dennis Pelletier, I am 26 years old and currently live in Windsor, CT. I grew up in Coventry and joined the US Air Force right out of high school. I served five years in the Air Force in Security Forces and I was fortunate enough to travel around the world and live in Turkey and Guam for some time. My deployment to Iraq opened me up to EMS and I discovered I had a passion for it. Once out of the Air Force I started college and worked at Cabelas in the firearms section. I took my EMT class in the Summer of 2014 at Code One in East Hartford and I currently have an Associates Degree in Homeland Security from Goodwin College in East Hartford. I am also finishing up my Bachelors degree in Public Safety and Security at Goodwin. My ultimate career goal is to have a career in emergency management however EMS is not just a stepping stone, I see it as a career as well. I eventually want to get my Paramedic license and a Master’s Degree in emergency management with a focus on public health. I am excited to begin a career with Aetna Ambulance and to provide a public service.

David Rivera Jr:     FULL TIME, EMT. My name is David Rivera Jr. I am 27 years old and currently reside in East Hartford, CT. I became a certified EMT about two years ago. I am a volunteer member of the Manchester Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT. I have always been so interested in how the human body works and its functions. That small fire really burned within me when I went on my ride along with Aetna while working on my certification. Volunteering with the fire department and going on emergency calls just confirmed that this was what I wanted to do. Everyone in this world has a purpose/calling and I truly believe that this is mine. I am a new father to a beautiful baby girl. I will take care of every child as if they were my own. I will a care of every mom, dad, brother, sister, grandmother and grandfather as if they were my own. I spend my free time with my family, loved ones and two dogs. I give thanks to God as He is the rock in my life. My hobbies are working out, fishing and reading. I am blessed and thankful for this opportunity with Aetna and I look forward to the experiences and room for growth.

Shawn Testa:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Shawn Testa and I was born and raised in Bristol, CT. I am a six-year veteran of the United States Army. After graduating high school I joined the Army as an Airborne Infantry Medic and was stationed in North Carolina for four years. I was deployed for two combat tours in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom VIII and X with the 82nd Airborne Division. I was attached to an infantry company of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment and participated in daily patrols as the first line of immediate medical attention. Aside from battlefield medicine, I was responsible for clinical and daily care of the soldiers in my unit. The final two years of my military career were completed as a reservist in New York. After my initial enlistment I went to school and recently graduated from Tunxis Community College with an Associates Degree in Science. I enjoy spending time out doors and camping with my family and close friends. My favorite holiday is The Fourth of July. America!

Eric Thepsiri:     FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Eric Thepsiri, I’m 22 and I grew up in Vernon, CT.  I first got started in EMS when I became an EMT at 16.  My first call was a respiratory arrest.  I remember being excited, nervous and scared all at the same time. When I began to bag the patient and they started breathing again, it was the best feeling I’ve ever felt. That was the call that sparked my love for medicine. I decided to continue my education at the University of Connecticut as a pre-med student.  As I was going through my studies at Uconn, I came to the realization I wanted more out of my education. Not only did I want a degree but I wanted my education to be practical.  I wanted to learn how to care for patients, how to make tangible differences and explore emergency medicine. Therefore, after my junior year at Uconn, I decided to become a paramedic. I enrolled in Goodwin College/Hartford Hospital’s Paramedic Program, where I recently graduated in December 2014. Currently, I work as an EMT for the town of Vernon and help to teach with the Department of EMS Education at Hartford Hospital. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending my time with friends and family, taking pictures, traveling and providing sustainable medical care overseas. I’m excited to start my journey in paramedicine here as a member of the Aetna Family, while continuing my education towards medical school.”

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s Samuel Dybdahl Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD –  As of March 18, 2015, Aetna’s Samuel Dybdahl has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves.

Sam’s preceptor was Paramedic Matt Campbell. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field. As with all precepting phases at Aetna, Sam’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing him and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls.

Sam has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, is a nationally registered Paramedic and received training as an Army Critical Care Flight Paramedic from University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX. He  is a combat medic and healthcare specialist in the military since 2008 with one deployment to Afghanistan. Sam says he enjoys helping others and furthering his knowledge within the medical field. In his spare time he often competes in Duathlon/Triathlons, road races and weight lifting.

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s Terrence Wain Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD –  As of February 3, 2015, Aetna’s Terrence “TJ” Wain has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves.

TJ’s preceptor was Paramedic Jennifer Pasquale. The full precepting phase can take ten to 12 weeks or more as the paramedic is prepped for the realities of the field. As with all precepting phases at Aetna, TJ’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing Terrence and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls.

TJ started at Aetna as an EMT-Basic in 2014 and graduated from the Capital Community College Paramedic Program. Initially from Waterbury, TJ resides in Wolcott and volunteers for the fire department there.  A graduate of University of New Haven with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, he was President of the New Haven Alumni Association until attending Paramedic school at Capital Community College. TJ actively DJs events and stays fit through cross-fit and other endurance activities.

Connecticut State Police, Aetna and ASM Toy Drive for CCMC – Event Wrap-up

HARTFORD — On December 22, 2014 a dozen Connecticut State Police cruisers, ambulances from Aetna and ASM and a UHaul full of donated toys convoyed from Troop H to Connecticut Childcare’s Medical Center. Over the course of the last four days, team of Troopers and members of the Aetna and ASM families joined together for the 18th annual effort.

According to Connecticut Children’s President Marty Gavin, thus far the Toy Drive has brought in $220,000 and a half million toys. Last year alone $18,000 and three UHaul trucks full of toys were donated. Each year enough toys are brought in to give a toy to each of the 59,000 children seen at all of CCMC’s locations. Enough even to give a toy to any siblings that accompany the child on their visit.

This year, Aetna and ASM contributed 216 hours to the effort. We are extraordinarily proud to take part and to be team members with CCMC and the State Police.
