Cub Scout Pack 223 had an exciting visitor this past week to explain what it takes to be a first responder. ASM Paramedic Michael Levasseur fielded questions from 20 eager scouts and parents. The scouts gave thanks by creating some beautiful artwork!
MANCHESTER – The 9th Annual “Emergency of Hunger” Food Drive, composed of first responders, Rotary members, and others, was a great success! Their combined efforts continue to make a deep and widening impact on hunger in greater Hartford. This year volunteers from Manchester, Vernon, and South Windsor collected a staggering 31,000+ food items, 675+ turkeys, and $16,000 in gift card and monitory donations. The 9th Annual “Emergency of Hunger” Food Drive kicked off this past weekend with Manchester Area Conference of Churches and Hockanum Valley Community Council getting an early start. Goods were collected at Manchester, Vernon and Rockville Stop & Shops. Thus far, a total of 7,474 food items, 257 turkeys and over $5700 has been donated by community members. This weekend, South Windsor Food and Fuel Bank joins the effort with help from South Windsor Police, Fire, and Rotary Club Members.

Emergency response agency and food pantry representatives gathered Tuesday at the Manchester Area Conference of Churches Food Pantry to kick off the Emergency of Hunger Food Drive

First responders again are collecting food to stock regional soup kitchens and pantries.
The first collection for the Emergency of Hunger Food Drive is set for Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Manchester Stop & Shop, 286 Broad St. The effort is to continue the following weekend.
Now in its ninth year, the drive relies on volunteers from police, fire and emergency medical agencies, along with Rotary Club members and Stop & Shop and Geissler’s supermarkets. Collections benefit clients of soup kitchens and food pantries run by Manchester Area Conference of Churches Charities and the Hockanum Valley Community Council.
Last year, people donated about 34,000 food items, 650 turkeys and $16,000 in gift cards and cash.
“Every year we are shocked, amazed and proud of the generosity we see,” food drive spokesman Patrick Gleason of Ambulance Service of Manchester said Monday. “To date, our records show a combined total of 1,149,000 meals served.”

Wethersfield- On Sunday, November 5th 2017, Aetna employees attended a Food Drive at Stop and Shop (1380 Berlin Tpke) hosted by Wethersfield PD, FD and EMS. Nick Caisse and Lauren Hartwell teamed up with members of the Wethersfield agencies to collect goods for donation to the local food bank at event end.
MANCHESTER — On October 28, 2017 Ambulance Service of Manchester EMTs Elizabeth Miller and Thomas MacLean set up an “Amb-boo-lance” near Pinewood Furniture as part of Downtown Manchester’s Halloween Happenings. Liz and Tom handed out candy to the trick-or-treaters making their way to each store and business taking part in the event on Main Street.
Dispatcher Michael Lyman (Batman), EMT Bianca Krzynowek and Paramedic Chris Myska joined in the festivities as well.
Year one fundraising for Team ASM-Aetna was a great success. Through the efforts of our employees, family members, and friends, we were able to raise close to $1,100 for Breast Cancer Research. With the company match, and proceeds from the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk this past Sunday, a total of $3,288 has been donated to the American Cancer Society. Thank you to everyone involved for your generous contributions and dedication to the cause.

MANCHESTER- On Thursday October 12th, ASM Director of Operations, Stephen Conley, served as a panelist at St. Bridget’s Church to offer insight on the opioid crisis from the EMS provider’s perspective. The event was covered by Annie Gentile of the Hartford Courant and published in the Courant Community section this morning.

MANCHESTER- Purchasing a t-shirt and bracelet in order to donate to ASM and Aetna’s Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser was only the beginning for Ambulance Service of Manchester EMT, Kristi Glowacki. In an effort to raise more money for the cause, Kristi put her talent for baking to good use. As you’ll note in the adjacent photo, Kristi dedicated a portion of her time off to prepare pink ribbon cookies, as well as pink frosted cupcakes. The first round, offered last week, sold-out in a matter of minutes. ASM anticipates the same result today.
All of the proceeds will be matched by the company and presented to the American Cancer Society at the end of the month.Thanks to Kristi, both for her baking abilities and compassion!

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight woman in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Each year, it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed. In an effort to raise money for research, and in honor of those affected, the Ambulance Service of Manchester has offered employees pink long sleeve t- shirts and rubber bracelets (Livestrong style) for the price of a small donation. At the end of the month, the company will match the total contribution and direct all of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

EAST HARTFORD- On Tuesday, September 26th 2017 Heather Roy and Allie Norton, members of the Ambulance Service of Manchester’s call taking team attended Riverside Health & Rehabilitation’s “Paint Night Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s.” In an effort to support the 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer’s (the Nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds), participants received instruction from local artist Scott Ginter, then created a floral design canvas honoring those affected by the disease.
ROCKY HILL- On Friday September 22, 2017 Aetna Paramedic Shannon Whalen, and EMTs Laura Cashman and Thomas Whalen were on hand during the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs “Stand Down 2017” As provided on Connecticut’s Official State Website ( link available below), “this event provides CT Veterans with access to a variety of federal, state and local services such as: veterans benefits, medical, dental, mental health, recovery services, legal, housing, employment, education and much more.”
SOUTH WINDSOR — On September 7th-10th, 2017 crews from the Ambulance Service of Manchester were on hand at the Wapping Fair in South Windsor. The event is organized by the South Windsor Jaycees Foundation and is billed as an exciting combination of fun, unique entertainment and lots of family friendly hands on attractions, two of which were sponsored by ASM.
ASM performed a medical standby alongside South Windsor Fire Department partners. The standby served a dual purpose as the children were able to take tours of the ambulance and fire apparatus.
