10th Annual Emergency of Hunger Food Drive Results!

MANCHESTER – The 10th Annual “Emergency of Hunger” Food Drive, composed of first responders, Rotary members, and others, was a great success! Their combined efforts continue to make a deep and widening impact on hunger in greater Hartford. This year volunteers from Manchester, Vernon, and South Windsor collected   28,000+ food items, 850+ turkeys, and $15,000 in gift card and monitory donations. Please click here to read Contact Reporter Jesse Leavenworth’s article in the Hartford Courant!

ASM Attends Veteran’s Dedication in Hebron

On November 15th 2018, Colebrook Village at Hebron hosted a Veteran’s Day Commemoration to honor their resident veterans. ASM EMTs Cody Desilets and Lieutenant Kayla Fortin attended the ceremony which included a Veterans Wall of Honor Dedication.

Aetna Receives Trust Annual Award of Excellence

HARTFORD- On November 15th, 2018 Carol Fronczek, Worker’s Compensation Trust’s Vice President of Loss Control Services presented Aetna Ambulance Service with “Trust’s Award of Excellence.” Over recent years, Aetna has proactively implemented a number of programs in an effort to improve both patient and provider safety. These initiatives have been developed and implemented by Aetna’s Safety and Health Committee.

Congratulations for Aetna being awarded the Trust’s Award of Excellence.  Your organization was nominated by Sandy Brophy who put together quite a compelling overview of the various safety activities your organization and you do to keep employees safe.

The Trust Award of Excellence is given to members who:

Award of Excellence

Presented to members who have demonstrated a commitment to safety within their organizations. Criteria includes a favorable workers’ compensation loss history, effective and innovative risk management programs, the accommodation of injured workers back to the workforce, and the presence of a strong safety culture.

Aetna Participates in Wethersfield First Responder Food Drive

Wethersfield- On Sunday, November 11th 2018, Aetna employees attended a Food Drive at Stop and Shop (1380 Berlin Tpke) hosted by Wethersfield PD, FD and EMS. Greg Kendall and Madison Nixon teamed up with members of the Wethersfield agencies to collect goods for donation to the local food bank at event end.

Meet the Newest Members of the Team: Aetna Hires Five – 2018

HARTFORD — On November 5th, 2018, five EMTs were added to the Aetna team. As part of our continued growth, Aetna and ASM seek out only the best candidates. We look for employees who are focused on high-quality patient care, are team oriented and conduct themselves in a professional manner. During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Alex England: FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Alex England. I graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2015 with a Bachelor’s in Physiology and Neurobiology as well as a Bachelor’s in Molecular and Cell Biology. I have been an EMT for two years and have been working in the Saint Francis Emergency Department as a Technician. My professional goal is to become a Doctor. My fields of interest include Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics and Family Medicine. I am excited to be joining the Aetna team this fall as an EMT-B.

John Magnuson: FULL TIME, EMT. My name is John Magnuson. I am 22 years old from North Haven CT. This past spring, I completed EMT training at Code One. I also hold certifications in Firefighter I and II as well as HazMat Awareness and Operations. In my free time, I am a volunteer firefighter in North Haven and I also enjoy snowboarding, kayaking and quading. I am looking forward to starting my career at Aetna and continuing my education to one day become a paramedic. My future plan is to become a Fire Medic. I’m excited to start working with all of you!

Kelsey Lopata: FULL TIME, EMT. Hi, I am Kelsey. This past spring I was certified as an EMT through Code One in East Hartford. I searched for a career in the medical field and found EMT a great entry point. I am excited that I received a position at Aetna and look forward to furthering my experience as a medical professional.

Aidan Mace: FULL TIME, EMT. Hi, my name is Aidan Mace. I’m currently finishing up my paramedic program at capital community college. I’ve been an EMT for just over two and a half years. I started at AMR and have worked at Glastonbury EMS for the last almost two years now. I’m excited and looking forward to being a part of the Aetna team.

Aetna Participates in Hartford Yard Goats Halloween Event!

HARTFORD- On Sunday, October 28th, 2018 Aetna Ambulance, along with numerous  local business and sponsors participated in “Connecticut’s largest Halloween Trick or Treat” community event at  Dunkin’ Donuts Park. Thousands of children and families attended, but Aetna was well prepared thanks to the efforts of Supervisor Bob Mara.

Team ASM-AETNA Blood Drive Results

MANCHESTER- On Wednesday October 2nd, 2018 Team ASM-Aetna hosted its second American Red Cross Blood Drive at ASM’s headquarters. Numerous employees, friends, and family members participated in the day-long event. Aetna and ASM have committed to hosting a drive twice a year. The next event is scheduled for 5/1/2019.

EAST HARTFORD- On Tuesday,October 2nd, 2018 Heather Roy and Allie Norton, members of the Ambulance Service of Manchester’s call taking team attended Riverside Health & Rehabilitation’s “Paint Night Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s.” In an effort to support the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s (the Nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds), participants received instruction from local artist Scott Ginter, then created a floral design canvas honoring those affected by the disease.

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: ASM’s Charles Lodge Completes Precepting Phase

MANCHESTER – As of September 28th, 2018, ASM’s Charles Lodge has been cleared by Eastern Connecticut Health Network medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that ASM serves. His preceptors were veteran paramedics Greg Derosier and Dave White. Charlie was hired at the Ambulance Service of Manchester in March, 2015. He offered the following sentiment:

“During my precepting phase I responded to roughly 100 calls over a 10-week period. ASM has a very large coverage area so this was an excellent opportunity as a new Paramedic to get familiar with many of the volunteer services we work alongside. Having two of ASM’s seasoned paramedics offer guidance as I transitioned into my new role was paramount. In conjunction to emergencies, a large part of our job is high acuity interfacility transfers between area hospitals. Greg and Dave were crucial in getting me familiar with how ASM operates in this capacity and our role as Paramedics. I thoroughly enjoyed my time practicing alongside the two of them and I am excited to be cleared for independent med control.”

As with all precepting phases at ASM, Charlie’s final approval came from Eastern Connecticut Health Network after shadowing him and his preceptors in the field as they responded to emergency calls. On behalf of the ASM Family, we would like to wish Charles the best of luck and say we are very proud to have such skilled professionals on staff.

ASM Participates in Annual Charity Softball Tournament!

MANCHESTER — On Saturday September 15, 2018 Ambulance Service of Manchester employees returned to play in the 4th annual charity softball tournament against teams from Manchester Police Department and Manchester Fire Rescue EMS. Proceeds from the event benefit the Manchester Police Benevolent Association. Praise for Aetna Paramedics

Aetna Ambulance Service Paramedics Dan Hope Emma Becroft were recognized yesterday by Hartford Hospital for their outstanding performance while assessing and transporting a patient in late August. While in the midst of the precepting process, Dan and Emma responded to a call in the city. Their assessment included a 12-lead EKG which was indicative of a STEMI. The crew wirelessly transmitted the 12-lead EKG to Hartford Hospital, activating their cardiac catherization lab from the field. Both team members received jackets from the Hartford Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute (displayed above). Please join Aetna in congratulating Emma and Dan.

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: Aetna’s David Rivera Completes Precepting Phase

HARTFORD – As of July 19th, 2018, David Rivera has been cleared by Hartford Hospital medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that Aetna serves. His preceptor was Paramedic Greg Kendall. David started at Aetna in March of 2015 and graduated from Capital Community College Paramedic Program.

As with all precepting phases at Aetna, David’s final approval came from Hartford Hospital after shadowing him and his preceptor in the field as they responded to emergency calls. On behalf of the Aetna Family, we would like to wish David the best of luck and say we are very proud to have such skilled professionals on staff.

SOUTH WINDSOR- On Thursday August 16th 2018, Ambulance Service of Manchester EMT’s Spenser Shirshac and Christopher Melite spent the afternoon enjoying the food and festivities at the Journey Found Summer Picnic at Nevers Park in South Windsor. The mission of Journey Found is “to provide behavioral, residential and other support services to individuals of Connecticut with pervasive developmental disorders and intellectual disabilities.” Spencer and Chris were able to interact with members while providing standby coverage for the event.

Aetna Participates in 18th Annual Cruisin’ on Main Street Event

MANCHESTER- On August 5th, 2018 ASM and Aetna’s lead in-house Mechanic, John Myles proudly attended Manchester’s 18th annual Cruisin’ on Main Street Event with our fully restored 1970 Aetna Cadillac Ambulance. With assistance from full time mechanics Haris and Greg, the vehicle was refurbished, shined and fired up to cruise down Main Street once again. The ambulance joined roughly 1000 other classic cars, trucks and street rods to help raise money for the Manchester Scholarship Foundation. Since 2001, the show has hosted over 14,000 vehicles and over 400,000 people have attended. As John explains, people of all ages enjoyed viewing the ambulance as the vehicle consistently drew a crowd.

 

Cleared for Independent Dispatch: ASM’s Dave Tedeschi Completes Precepting Phase

MANCHESTER – As of June 13th, 2018, ASM’s David Tedeschi has been cleared by Eastern Connecticut Health Network medical control for independent dispatch as a paramedic to the towns that ASM serves. His preceptors were Paramedic Supervisor Josh Traber and Paramedic Greg Derosier. Dave was hired at the Ambulance Service of Manchester in December, 2011. He offered the following sentiment regarding his time at ASM:

I started working at ASM about 7 years ago. After spending time as an EMT, I wanted to do more in the medical field. I decided to enroll in the Capital Community College Paramedic Program and graduated this past December. I look forward to practicing medicine as a paramedic in the area that ASM covers. I want to thank my preceptors for their knowledge and guidance during my journey.

As with all precepting phases at ASM, his final approval came from Eastern Connecticut Health Network after shadowing him and his preceptors in the field as they responded to emergency calls.
