MANCHESTER — I am a student at Rockville High School and through the Career Center I arranged to job shadow an EMT. I was assigned to spend the day at Ambulance Service of Manchester. During the experience I rode in the ambulance and went on about 4 or 5 calls. The calls were all different. Some were emergencies, some were not. The most interesting emergency call that I went on was with Cathy and John. It involved a man who was unresponsive and they had truly no background knowledge on him. They showed me how they were able to work quickly and under pressure to help him. I watched as they went through their procedures and what an EMT goes through on a daily basis.
I have always been interested in the medical field, but wasn’t sure what area I wanted to go into. This job shadow experience opened my eyes to what it’s really like and what being an EMT is all about. I realized this job is very interesting and no two days are ever the same. I learned that EMT’s have a very important job. I learned a lot and am very happy that I did this job shadow. I strongly encourage others to do the same, if they’re interested in the medical field.
