Meet the Newest Members of the Team: ASM Hires Five

MANCHESTER — On February 4, 2015 five EMTs were added to the ASM team. As part of our continued growth ASM and Aetna seek out only the best candidates. We look for employees who are focused on high-quality patient care, are team oriented and conduct themselves in a professional manner. During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Tiffany Armas:     FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Tiffany and I’m 23 years old.  I was born in Caracas, Venezuela and moved here when I was ten.  I graduated from UCONN in May with a B.S. in Allied Health and a minor in Biology.  I currently work per diem at the UCONN Student Health Services Laboratory and I’m trained in phlebotomy.  I love working in the medical field and am super excited to be involved in emergency care.  In my spare time I like to cook, practice yoga, and anything involving being outdoors.  I’m also trying to teach myself Portuguese and after that, hopefully another language.  I love traveling and learning about different cultures and hope to one day be able to volunteer around the US as well as the rest of the world as a doctor to help communities in need.

Cheryl Everest:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Cheryl Everest I am 23 years old and currently live in Simsbury. I take great pride in helping people everyday in our community. I took my  EMT course three years ago and almost instantly fell in love with EMS. I recently graduated from Tunxis Community College with my associates. In my spare time I like to hike with my dog and spend time with my horses. I also volunteer with Simsbury Ambulance. I could not be more pleased to be able to turn my EMS passion into a career with ASM. I plan to further my career in emergency medical a services and become a paramedic.

Patrick Gleason:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Patrick Gleason, I am 43 years old and l live in Manchester, CT. At age 18 I joined the Army and served four years active duty with the 25th Infantry Division.  I assumed the duties of squad leader and particularly enjoyed the time I spent at Combat Life Saver School.  I went on to work as a Regional Director and Project Manager in the business world but always yearned to acquire an occupation in the medical field.  In 2014 I completed an EMT course at Code One in East Hartford and obtained my license. I love to learn new things and am looking forward to a more meaningful career by making a difference in the lives of those I serve as an EMT.  The experience I will gain in the field as an EMT will help to prepare me for my ultimate goal of becoming a Paramedic. I spend my free time with my wife and two kids, attend and volunteer at our church and am assistant coach for basketball at the kids school.  I am excited and grateful for this new opportunity.

Jonathan Sanchez:     FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Jonathan Sanchez and I am 22 years old and from New Britain, CT. I graduated from Tunxis Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. My career goal is to become a police officer and to do the best I can to support the communities and the laws in place. In 2012 I got my first job at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center as a transportation tech. With this job I became exposed to the hospital environment and was intrigued by the hospital environment and how much health care providers make a difference in the people they help. That’s when I decided to become an EMT. I obtained my certification last year and since July I have had the pleasure to work in the Emergency Room as an ER Technician which is basically an EMT within the ER. I have seen many different types of patients, from basic toe pain to cardiac arrests. I have done all types of different jobs and procedures within the ER and I love the fact that I get to actually help people out when they are in need and potentially help save a life. I look forward to working with the ASM crew and learning new things and incorporate what I already know on the road. I look forward to the future with the ambulance service and hope to take what I have learned and incorporate that in my career later on in life!

HARTFORD — On November 6, 2014, eight EMTs were added to the Aetna team. As part of our continued growth Aetna and ASM seek out only the best candidates. Ryan Dunn:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Ryan Dunn and I am 23 years old from Houston, Texas. I graduated from TCU in 2013 with a degree in Biology and Chemistry and the eventual goal to go to medical school. After working in the Emergency Department as a scribe for 2 years, I moved up to Tolland and got my certification at CodeOne in East Harford in July.  In my free time I like to watch sports of all types, play basketball, and play video games. I am excited and grateful to be part of the Aetna team and can’t wait to work with and meet all of you!

Shahbaz Khan:   FULL TIME, EMT. Hello everyone my name is Shahbaz Khan. I am 29 years old and live in Bristol, CT. I was born in Pakistan but raised in United States. I did my undergrad at Central Connecticut State University, from there I went to Atlanta, GA because I got accepted to Cambridge Allied Health for RT(T) Radiation Therapy. I took two years to complete the course and got my diploma. When I come back to CT I became an RA (Recovery Assistant) helping mentally disabled patient, not getting enough working hours I knew I needed to do something else. I was doing my independent studies to get licensed for RT(T) but I needed a profession which will help me gain knowledge, experience, and something I would love to do. My friend who works for Aetna told me “why don’t you come to Aetna and try working as an EMT”. I thought about it and gave it a shot. I was lucky enough to get a job in Naugatuck Ambulance and after getting cleared from the FTO’s I started to enjoy myself as an EMT. I learned new things every day. Every my partner and I did was exciting and I was hooked. I enjoy working in the medical field and try to stay connected as much as I can. The feeling of helping someone and being there for the patient in time of their need is the best feeling. In my spare time I love spending time with my friends. I am a people person so I like interacting with people and making new friends. I enjoy working out, going for a run and dance whenever I have spare time. I live life to fullest although sometimes life does pull you down, but you only get one life so enjoy it as much as you can. I look forward in meeting and making new friends with this company.

Brianna Koshmerl:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Brianna Koshmerl and I am 22 years old from Glastonbury Connecticut. I Grew up in Glastonbury and graduated from Glastonbury High School. I started my college career at UMass Amherst, But transferred for my sophomore year to UConn. While on campus, I participated in many extracurricular’s and philanthropy events, did research in biological sciences, and held student jobs. I graduated from UConn in May, 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology. I just completed my EMT-B course this past summer, and are excited to begin gaining experience in the emergency services field. I want to attend a Physician’s Assistant program, and are using this experience as a gateway into the healthcare career with patient interactions.

Jared Kuhne:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Jared Kuhne and I am 29. Originally I come from northeast Pennsylvania, and recently moved to Ellington CT with my wife.  I am a veteran of the United States Air Force, and served in Afghanistan as a translator. During my four year commitment, I earned my Bachelor’s degree and went on to continue my education as a pre-med major at the Central Connecticut State University.  I received my EMT training in New York City with Empress Ambulance Service, before moving to Connecticut.  I enjoy being a productive member of the community I live in, and I hope that I can make a positive impact here in Hartford.   It is my hope to become a knowledgeable healthcare provider, and I’m looking forward to kick starting this career as an EMT with Aetna Ambulance.

Lauren Slebodnick:   FULL TIME, EMT.  Originally from Manchester, NH, I now live in Suffield, CT.  I am 22 years old and I just graduated from Cornell University in May 2014 with a degree in Biology & Society.  I was a goalie on the Women’s Ice Hockey Team while in college and I hope to continue my hockey career to the 2018 Winter Olympics.  I am also a big Bruins fan.  I took an EMT class over the summer and recently obtained my certification.  I also volunteer with Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association and Johnson Memorial Medical Center.  In the future, I hope to further my education by attending a Physician Assistant Program.  I am very excited to join Aetna’s team and I look forward to meeting and learning from my fellow colleagues.

TJ Wain:    FULL TIME, EMT. My name is TJ Wain.  I am twenty-six years old initially from Waterbury, CT.  I currently reside in Wolcott where I volunteer for the local fire department.  I graduated University of New Haven back in 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, concentrating my studies in Police Administration.  I was active as an undergraduate DJing various events on and off campus as well as holding several executive positions in the Sigma Chi Fraternity raising funds for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation as well as the Children’s Miracle Network.  As an alumnus, I continued my work as President of the New Haven Alumni Association until attending Paramedic school at Capital Community College, Fall of 2013.   After attending paramedic school, I found that I truly enjoyed the impact that I was able to have on peoples’ lives.  It may not necessarily be “providing that band-aid,” but providing information, with genuine care, for a more beneficial impact.  “What’s a man’s worth if he’s not making the world a better place.” In my spare time, I still actively DJ events as well as enjoy gym, cross-fit and other endurance activities.  I look forward to advancing my career in paramedicine and find there is a lot of opportunity in the field for growth and education.

Chris Willey:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Chris Willey and I am originally from New Jersey. I moved to Killingworth when I was fourteen and after college moved Manchester where I have lived for the past year and a half. I went to UCONN for Psychology and Anthropology. I had originally planned to go into accounting or business but realized early on that wasn’t for me. I started to have interest in the medical field my junior year and after talking to friends who were involved in it, quickly became interested in emergency medicine and EMS. In 2012 I took my EMT course at Hartford Hospital. The following year I started volunteering as an EMT, and began working in Hartford Hospitals Emergency Department as an ER Technician. I also work as an EMT in East Windsor. Currently I’m in my final semester of Paramedic School at Goodwin College. I am looking forward to starting my career at Aetna and am counting down the days till orientation!

Alex Zhakov:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Alex Zhakov and I am 22 years old. I was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia and I moved to the United States when I was four years old. Since then, I’ve lived in different parts of Connecticut and love the area. Currently, I reside in Farmington, CT. I recently graduated from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA with a Bachelor’s Degree. While attending college in Massachusetts, I completed my EMT certification and am looking forward to beginning my EMS career in Connecticut. When given the opportunity, I love to travel and experience new cultures. In my free time, I love running outdoors, working out at the gym, cooking, catching up on current events, spending time with my family, and playing with my dog. I hope to continue my medical career in the future by attending graduate school. I am particularly interested in the field of infectious disease and would love to someday have a career focused in this area. I am thrilled to be a part of the Aetna team and can’t wait to begin!

ASM Promotes Four to Field Training Officer (FTO)

MANCHESTER — On August 20, 2014 the Ambulance Service of Manchester promoted four from within its EMT ranks to the post of Field Training Officer: Dan Hammett, Andrew Hedburg, Michael Hoyt and Brian Langan. FTOs are utilized primarily to train newly hired employees in the performance of their duties as EMTs.

Dan Hammett:   I have been with ASM for almost three years and an EMT for just over four years. I first got involved in EMS w/ the Scotland Volunteer Fire Department and was promoted to EMS Captain this past year. Some of my duties are QA/QI and to train new members which will be a great asset to train new employees. I have been married for three years and live with my wife in Scotland. I look forward to meeting new people and to train them and represent ASM!

Andrew Hedburg:  I have been a member of the ASM team for 3 1/2 years. While not at work I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife Sam our daughter Charlotte and crazy dog Otis enjoy spending much of our time out side. From sitting on the beach playing in the waves to working in our gardens. I began my career in EMS volunteering with East Haddam Ambulance. I quickly found that this job was my passion and was lucky to get hired by ASM. During my employment I have had many wonderful experiences and have found that I have a passion for teaching new EMTs. I look forward to helping  to continue to build this excellent team.

Michael Hoyt:   Ever since my first day of EMT class I have been impressed with the quality and caliber of the employees of ASM. Having the opportunity to work with new employees to ensure they meet the high standards of ASM is something I look forward to. I hope to instill a strong foundation of compassion, patient advocacy, as well as quality medical care that employees can build upon throughout their time at ASM.

Brian Langan:   I have been an EMT for nine years and an AEMT for four years. I started at ASM while in college working every weekend and when I graduated I became full time. I began my career in the first responder field with the Glastonbury Fire Department, with which I am still very active. On September 6th I will marry my fiance Natasha Snyder and I am fortunate that she understands my work hours! I have always enjoyed helping people and am happy to be able to assist in their times of need.

Tom Carey:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Thomas Carey and I am 22 years old. I lived in East Hartford until I was 11 years old and then moved to South Windsor. I have always had a passion for helping others which is what drove me to public safety in the first place. Growing up I wanted to be everything a veterinarian, a zoo keeper, and even a paleontologist. Animals are one of my biggest passions in life. When I was in high school I was in a program called Kids N’ Critters, where we brought snakes, turtles, tortoises, lizards, toads, and frogs to elementary schools to teach children about the animals and what to do when they see one. I have handled all sorts of creatures, from snakes that are larger than I am to even alligators. I wanted to become a police officer for the ASPCA to protect animal rights, and that’s when I began my education into criminal justice at Manchester Community College. I also joined the South Windsor Fire Department and realized how much I enjoyed being a fireman. Since my membership I have completed Fire 1, Fire 2, and have been chosen to be a member of the departments Rescue Squad. My career choice had changed and now I want to become a Career Firefighter. So now here I am a member of ASM and I couldn’t be happier to be working in a field that I want to be in. Although the job will take up much of my time I am still looking into volunteering at an animal shelter of some kind as well as being involved in the fire service.

Jeff Hornish:  FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Jeff Hornish.  I am 55 years old and live in South Windsor. I have a daughter who is an EMT and works at St Francis Hospital’s ED as a tech, and a three year old grandson (who calls me “B”).  Born and raised in South Windsor, I enjoy camping and hiking.  I went through a number of jobs until I found my career in EMS. I started as an EMT with the South Windsor Ambulance Corps on 8/8/2001.  Over the years I’ve had many pleasant experiences working with ASM employees on intercept calls.  I am very happy to be able to continue my EMS career working with those same people.  I am very impressed by the professionalism and camaraderie here at ASM.  I also plan to advance my career by becoming a Paramedic at ASM.

Tom MacLean:   FULL TIME, EMT. Hello, my name is Tom MacLean, I’m 24 years old and live in Vernon CT. I graduated Xavier High School in Middletown CT and went on to study Business Administration at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY. I did some volunteer work in the Vernon Fire Department in High School and really enjoyed the experience as a whole. In college, I became very business-minded and stepped away from EMS for awhile, but always missed the passion I felt in providing a service that really helped people. After working in the insurance industry for a couple years after school, a great opportunity opened up for me to complete my EMT certification. I went for it, and could not be happier with my decision. Outside of work, I like hanging out with my two boxer dogs and just having a good time. I’m a big New York sports enthusiast, and have always been a life long Yankee and Jets fan. Recently, I’ve also gotten pretty big into boxing – I love the discipline and it’s a great work out. I look forward to working at ASM and can’t wait to get to know everyone.

Keith Ringuette:  FULL TIME, EMT. Hello my name is Keith Ringuette. I am 22 years old and I am from Eastford, CT. I recently graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Connecticut in Allied Health Sciences and I’m excited to have a career in the job field I have been studying. Before UConn I attended Quinebaug Valley Community College where I graduated with Honors with my Associate’s Degree. I have lots of hobbies that include reading, playing videogames, and playing or watching any kind of sport. I obtained my EMT-B in 2012 after taking a course with Code One in East Hartford, CT. Both sides of my family have always been heavily involved in the medical field helping others, with their licensure ranging from LPN to Physician. I hope to continue my family’s legacy by getting experience as an EMT-B which will help me with my future goals of becoming a PA or nurse. If I were to get into graduate school I plan to join the military on scholarship so I can travel all over the world to open my horizons to the healthcare situations in other countries. My ultimate goal would be to become a PA in Orthopedic surgery aiding surgeons with surgical procedures.

Joey Startup:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Joey Startup and I live in East Hartford.  I come from a firefighter background in the CT Air National Guard.  I’ve served for about 11 years now and will retire at my 20 year mark. I’m proud to have served four tours.  About five years ago I started practicing as an EMT at the professional level working for a commercial service in Meriden for about four years before making the move to ASM.  I am currently attending school in MCC getting my prerequisites finished for a nursing career.  I have a dog named Sasha that is my life and is spoiled to death.  I am very excited to begin my career at ASM and get to know the ASM team.

During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Justin Duval:   FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Justin Duval and I am 31 years old. I live in Ashford, CT with my wife and two awesome boys. We have a 110 pound German shepherd babysitter named Major. I am certified at the level of Firefighter II and Wildland Firefighter Type 2. I have been a volunteer firefighter with the Ashford Volunteer Fire Department for five years now. My experience there has given me a passion for the EMS field. I have been an automotive mechanic for the past twelve years and I am ready to pursue a career in something that I enjoy doing and that makes me happy. I feel honored to be chosen for this position and look forward to my new career at ASM.

Carolyn Judge:   FULL TIME, EMT. Hi I’m Carolyn and I’m from Weston, CT.  I graduated from UConn with a degree in Biological Sciences and subsequently became an EMT.  I’ve been living in Newington for about a year and volunteering with Newington Volunteer Ambulance.  In my free time I enjoy outdoor sports in particular trail running and backpacking.  I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of ASM!

Laura McHugh:  FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Laura McHugh and I am 23 years old.  I grew up in East Windsor, but currently reside in Vernon, CT. I graduated high school in 2008 at EWHS, then attended Ridely Lowell for Medical Assistant. The summer of 2013 I studied for my EMT-B certification at CPR Training Professionals while working at JMH in the Emergency Department. In my free time I enjoy running, hiking, reading, spending time with my family and traveling. I am also a huge New England Patriots fan. I’m excited to begin my career at ASM while serving the community.

Jovany Rosado:   FULL TIME, EMT. Well I’m a country bumpkin raised on a pig farm on a tropical island.  I’m an easy going gear-head that just loves humanity and firmly believes in that an ounce of honest heartfelt kindness will stop a tsunami of negativity and hatred. I’m a loving husband and father to a three month old baby girl and a 13 going 30 young man whom I swear wants me to get hit by a meteor.  As a gear head and an overall science enthusiast I love to tinker, modify, tear things apart and poke about it, whatever it may be.  I however am not a hopeless and unreasonable romantic.  We live in the REAL world where sometimes bad things happen to good and bad people.  Where accidents happen and people do terrible things to themselves and sadly to others.  I believe without a doubt that I can somehow in this giant equation of life, I can, with my tiny number, make a significant difference.  I’m a liver and lover of life.  I believe that life is too short as it is without negative circumstances prevailing.  As an EMT-B with his eyes on Paramedic school, I might be able to provide some time of precious life to those who I can extent of my abilities to.

During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

David Jackson:  My name is David Jackson and I am 22 years old. I graduated from the Boston University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology in 2014. My goal is to go to medical school and to go into the field of emergency medicine. I took my EMT-Basic class in Bridgeport, CT in 2008 at the Bridgeport Hospital Emergency Medicine Institute. I started working in EMS at Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Services, however, when I moved to Boston, MA for college I began working for Boston University Emergency Medical Services. In my spare time I enjoy scuba diving and boating on the Long Island Sound and I am very excited to start to work towards my Dive Master certification this summer. I truly love emergency medicine in all its forms and I am very excited to be one of the newest additions to this amazing team and to have the opportunity to work in your community. 

Eric Marandino:  My name is Eric Marandino. After being self-employed for the past 15 years (in the dental industry) I was looking for a career change. I know many people who are, or were EMTS and they all said how much they enjoyed the job. I graduated EMT last summer through Hartford Hospital. I feel very fortunate to have been hired by Aetna Ambulance and look forward to starting my new career.

I have trained in martial arts for 30 years. After extensive training in Tae Kwon Do, Hap Ki Do, Boxing, American Kickboxing and Jeet Kune Do, I began training Brazilian Jiujitsu 10 years ago. I have been fortunate to be able to teach, train and compete a lot in the past five years. I will continue to train jiujitsu for the rest of my life. Some of my other interests include mountain biking, hiking, cooking, movies and working on my house. I am an avid reader and I try to always be reading a good book.

Andrew O’Laughlin:  My name is Andrew O’Loughlin. I am 21 years old, and I am from Hebron Connecticut. I am a senior at UMASS Amherst, where I will be graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology this December. I work UMASS EMS while at school, and I am a volunteer EMT with the Fire Department in my hometown. I have a passion for patient care, and I look forward to working with the team at Aetna.

In my spare time I’m fairly active. I spend a lot of time weightlifting, running, hiking etc. You will see me at a lot of events like the Spartan Races and Tough Mudders. I have also done a few events with GORUCK. They focus on team building, for long hours (24+ for my most recent), under heavy weights. I also recently became a certified scuba diver, and plan on diving the local area this summer.

In the future I plan on continuing my education. My plan is to return to UMASS after graduation to complete a second bachelor’s in Nursing. I’m excited to expand my role in the healthcare field, but EMS will always by my passion. I intend on staying active within the field after I begin my career as a nurse.

Tony Mazzola:  My name is Anthony Mazzola, but you can call me Tony.  I am 21 years old.  I received my EMT last summer and have been working for Newington Volunteer Ambulance for the past six months.  Even though I am relatively new to this field, I have developed a passion for it and I feel as though I have a lot to gain from it.   I have just recently graduated from Manchester Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. I am going to be continuing my college career and pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU).  I love working on cars, particularly, Volkswagens. Yes, I am a Volkswagen guy!  I am very excited to be a part of the Aetna team and I look forward to meeting everyone!

During the orientation, employees learn about company philosophy and goals, quality assurance, and policies and procedures.

Jason Chasse:   FULL TIME, AEMT. My name is Jason Chasse. I am 22 years old and am from Burlington, CT. I have been an EMT since 2009 and an AEMT since 2011. I began my career in EMS as a volunteer for the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department in 2008. Before my employment at Aetna Ambulance I worked as a per-diem AEMT at ambulance services in Waterbury and Bristol. I graduated in the fall of 2013 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of New Haven and plan on perusing a career as a police officer. In my free time I enjoy spending my time outdoors with my friends and my German Shepherd named Indie. I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and shooting and am also an avid Jets fan.  I am very excited for the opportunity to join the Aetna Ambulance team. 

Adam Ordway: FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Adam Ordway, recently I graduated from paramedic school through Goodwin college. I am from Middletown and very excited to take the next step in my EMS career. I’m very happy to be working for Aetna Ambulance. Hopefully I can to live up to the great reputation Aetna has throughout the state and learn from some of the best. Previously, I worked for another commercial ambulance service in the central part of the state for about two and a half years. Currently, I am in the National Guard and served two deployments to Afghanistan as an Infantryman. I also worked as an emergency vehicle technician for a few years after graduating from high school.  I’m looking forward to working with everyone. 

Collin Whalen: FULL TIME, EMT. My name is Collin Whalen and I am 21 years old from Rocky Hill. I am a firefighter with the Rocky Hill Fire Department and a Volunteer with Rocky Hill Volunteer Ambulance. I started with Rocky Hill Fire Department at 14 years old as a cadet. In the summer of 2012 I took my EMT and joined Rocky Hill Ambulance. Public Service has run in my family for many generations as firefighters, EMT’s, Paramedics and police officers. I am glad to continue the tradition along with my brother Scott, who is a firefighter and who has also recently graduated from Army boot camp. I am looking forward to taking my paramedic in the future, after gaining valuable experience as an EMT. I am very excited to be apart of the Aetna team.

Samuel Dybdahl:   PART TIME, EMT.  My name is Samuel Dybdahl and I’m 26 years old. I am just completing a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and seek to further my career in Emergency Medicine.  I have been a combat medic and healthcare specialist in the military since 2008 with one deployment to Afghanistan. I enjoy helping others and furthering my knowledge within the medical field; I would like to pursue a paramedic program in the near future. In my spare time I often compete in physical activities including Duathlon/Triathlons, road races and weight lifting.

Ryan Gonska:  FULL TIME, Paramedic. My name is Ryan Gonska and I am 23 years old from Torrington, CT.  I am a volunteer with Harwinton West Side Fire Dept. and Harwinton Ambulance. I started at Harwinton Ambulance as an explorer when I was 15.  I received my EMT in 2008. Shortly after, I got hired as an ER Tech at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital while I was attending classes for the AEMT. Four years later I made the decision to get my Paramedic.  I graduated from Capitol Community College in 2012 and I have been working as a paramedic for the past year. In the near future I hope to get my EMSI and start teaching. I am considering going back to school in the to pursue a degree in respiratory therapy or nursing.  In my free time, I enjoy cooking, golfing, fishing, and hiking. I am very excited to join the Aetna family.

Steve Spaderna:   PART TIME, EMT. My name is Steve Spaderna and I am a new EMT! Prior to attaining my EMT certification I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology from CCSU.  I worked for about five years in genomic research as part of a team that was looking at human gene expression for potential drug targets. Then deciding I didn’t want to be stuck in a lab all the time, I spent about seven years working as a drug rep for large pharmaceutical companies. During my time as a drug rep I became increasingly interested in patient healthcare. I just didn’t feel fulfilled in my last occupation, so I made the decision to go back to school with the goal of eventually becoming a physician assistant. Over the last couple years I have been getting pre-requisite credits done while interning at a doctor’s office for required clinical hours. Physician Assistant programs are extremely competitive and difficult to get into, but I am hoping to eventually get accepted. Personally, I am kind of a science nerd and enjoy learning about anything and everything. I watch Discovery and The Learning Channel a lot (Untold Stories of the ER!) and I have a passion for science fiction. For an interesting combination, I also happen to be really into weightlifting. I am super excited to be part of the Aetna team and I am looking forward to the opportunity to be a patient advocate!

Kat Stewart:  FULL TIME, EMT. I’m a new EMT I finished the Hartford Hospital EMT program in July. This is something I have wanted to do since high school but I never had the chance. So after I graduated college and worked a few different jobs I finally made my chance happen and absolutely fell in love. I aspire to one day go to paramedic school. At the age of almost 26 I can finally say I’m on the right career path. I’m very excited to be part of the Aetna team and look forward to seeing you on the road.

Kyle Baker:    Full time, EMT. Hello my name Is Kyle Baker. I am 22 years old and live in Hebron, CT. I graduated in May of 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. The second semester of my freshman year of college I took an EMT-Basic class and almost instantly I fell in love.  I began working Saint Anselm College EMS, a student run volunteer EMS unit that serves the campus community, shortly after finishing my class. I also began volunteering with Andover Fire Department in Andover, Connecticut. I worked with Saint Anselm EMS until graduation and I continue to actively volunteer with Andover Fire Department.  EMS has been my passion for the last four years and I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to turn it into a career.  In my spare I enjoy listening to music, golfing and enjoying the outdoors. I am incredibly excited to begin my new adventure with the Ambulance Service of Manchester and I look forward to the new experiences I will have and the new people I will meet.

Evan Burgess:    Full Time, EMT. My name is Evan Burgess and I am 21 years old. I was born and raised in Manchester, CT and graduated Manchester High School in 2010. I attended the University of Connecticut for two years and then transferred to Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA to study Biblical Studies. Currently I am finishing my senior year of college online via Liberty University. I came home this year to finish school and get an EMT job. This summer I completed my EMT-B certification class at Hartford Hospital. I am very much involved in my church’s activities at Trinity Covenant Church and I enjoy ministering to people there. I love to play the guitar and I am a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. My brother Colin worked for ASM for a couple years before he headed off to medical school, and he inspired me to become an EMT. I hope to gain experience working with patients and helping them and their families during tough situations. I hope to become a missionary someday, and the experience I gain and learn from this career will aid me in my future endeavors. I am very excited to begin working and learning how to care for people in need.

Polina Yakushchenko:   Full Time, EMT. My name is Polina Yakushchenko and I am 23 years old. I was born in the Ukraine and moved to the United States in 2000. I now live in Vernon, CT. I recently graduated with a Bachelor in Health Science from Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania.  I have had some patient care experience in college working at the student health center along with the local hospitals. One day I hope to go to grad school and continue my education in the medical field. I love to travel and experience new places and cultures. I am very happy to begin working for ASM and I look forward to serving the community.

Steeve Parent: Full time EMT. Steeve, 25, is from Ashford and has been an EMT for just over one year. He attended EO Smith High School and the University of Connecticut. He previously worked for a commercial ambulance service in Norwich, CT and as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT at Ashford Fire Department. Steeve enjoys sports, movies and whitewater kayaking as hobbies.

Nicole Geier: I am 27 years old and I reside in Windsor, Connecticut with my husband Chris, our dog, Bender and our cat, Fry. I am currently enrolled in the Goodwin College Nursing Program and I will become a Registered Nurse in May 2014. With the Bachelor’s degree I already have in Criminal Justice; I hope to become an RN in a correctional facility. I spend most of my time volunteering at the Windsor Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT as well as volunteering at the Windsor Volunteer Ambulance, where I completed my EMT certification class this past May. I enjoy listening to music, playing the guitar and piano, watching TV and hanging out with family and friends. I love Diet Coke, the Red Sox and anything related to zombies (movies, books, video games – you name it!). I am looking forward to beginning my new career within the EMS field at ASM.

Michael Hoyt: I am 36 years old and live in Bolton with my girlfriend, Stephanie. I became interested in EMS while exploring a career change to nursing. I spent ten years working with people with disabilities throughout the state. After spending too much time at a desk, I wanted something more direct, more hands-on. I missed the personal connection to those I was serving. Since my first exposure to patient care, I’ve been hooked. I received my EMT certification in January from ASM and plan to study for my Paramedic license sometime in the future. I was impressed by the caliber of people I met while studying at ASM and feel honored to join the family. Outside of work, I enjoy reading and travel. I also enjoy playing with my nephews, building with blocks, playing cars, or perhaps the most pleasurable of all life’s pursuits, Legos.

Mikhail A. Khan: Full time EMT. When I was offered a position at ASM, one of the paramedics patted me on the back and welcomed me aboard. It was then I knew I had joined a great team. Anybody can kick a football but only a focused, coordinated team can win a championship.

Having traveled extensively, I have lived on three continents and am fluent in three languages and conversant in a few more. I spent many years in South Asia and East Africa and have traveled in Europe. Listening to Pink Floyd and U2 while hiking in the Himalayas and to Led Zeppelin and Queen during safaris, I am a huge music buff. My educational background is wide ranging, studying in an American Embassy School as well as strict Catholic schools. This exposure to different cultures has taught me that there are far more similarities than differences among people. I am an avid swimmer and an outdoor enthusiast.

My interest in EMS was sparked when I was only nine years old at a swimming pool. The lifeless body of a little boy had been pulled out of the deep end of the pool. There was pandemonium; the child’s family was hysterical while onlookers watched. My father, who had been trained in first aid, immediately took action and performed CPR on the boy who started to breathe. I will never forget how quickly his skin changed from ashen-blue to pink. It was then that I realized that EMS is a field where one can make a difference.

After many years, I entered the banking industry, living my life in a metaphorical and literal cubical. Once I completed the EMT program at Hartford Hospital and started volunteering extensively at a volunteer ambulance, I was professionally and personally invigorated. I have had the opportunity to work with some very talented paramedics and EMTs and aspire to become a paramedic in the near future by furthering my education in this area. I have come to learn that perseverance commands success.

Billy Schnepp: My name is Billy Schnepp. I am 22 years old and from Suffield, CT. I’ve been an EMT since high school and have been hooked ever since. I recently graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s in Psychology with a focus on neuroscience. In college, I volunteered as a clinical interpreter at a primary care office in Willimantic to help bridge the gap between Spanish-speaking patients and English-speaking providers. In my down-time, I enjoy swimming, reading, spending time with friends, and browsing clinical research. I am fascinated by the human body and am looking to pursue nursing school. I would ultimately like to become a physician or clinical psychologist. I’m always looking to further strengthen my skills in EMS, as well as obtain enrichment in all aspects of emergency care. I am looking forward to joining the ASM team.

Laura Adamowich: Part time EMT. My name is Laura Adamowich and I’m 23 years old. I first started my EMT class a little over a year ago, the day after I moved back to my hometown of Bristol, Connecticut from Virginia, where I had graduated from Liberty University with my Bachelor’s in History. I’ve been volunteering as an EMT since last fall when I received my certification and look forward to starting my career in EMS with Aetna. While working, I will also continue pursuing my Master’s degree part-time online through Northeastern University. When I’m not working or studying, I enjoy reading, gardening, music, photography and media, and exploring the rich history that Connecticut has to offer. I’m excited about the future I have ahead of me at Aetna, and look forward to continuing to learn and grow as an EMT!

Jeff D’Albero: Full time Paramedic. My name is Jeffrey D’Albero, I am 25 years old. I live in New London with my fiance Mariaha, and two year old Caleb. I have been involved in fire and EMS since I obtained my EMT when I was 16. I decided to further my education in 2010 when I started the paramedic program at Capitol Community College in Hartford. Upon completion I received my credentials and began working as a paramedic in Bridgeport. I also work as a part time Firefighter for the Town of Waterford. I enjoy SCUBA diving, crossfit, and spending time with friends and family. I am excited to join the Aetna Ambulance team and am looking forward to work.

Travis Dixon: Full time EMT. I am a full-time EMT and am 33 years old.  After a year of college at the University of Connecticut majoring in Business Management I enlisted in the US Marine Corps in Infantry. After 9/11 I began working at CCMC in the Human Resource Dept.  However in 2003 I was deployed for the invasion of Iraq where I traveled to Okinawa, Japan, Bahrain, Crete, Thailand, Kuwait and various other countries all within a year. When I returned I began working at Hartford Hospital but eventually decided to become self-employed. It was a visit to my mother’s house one day that changed my life.  She wasn’t home however my aunt from Florida was staying with her for the summer.  I found my aunt on her bedroom floor, suffering from a stroke.  It was a Paramedic that first responded.  It was that intense event that opened up my eyes to the EMS field. I have a five year old son who LOVES trains and is beginning kindergarten in September.  He is excited to see his Daddy on an Ambulance, helping people.

Michael Joseph: Full time EMT. Hello, my name is Michael William Edgar Joseph. Yes, I have four first names but I usually only use one or two of them. I graduated from UConn with a chemistry degree in 2009 and have been doing a little bit of everything since. I lived in Spain for a couple years working on farms then came home to work a couple jobs in chemistry and tutoring. My ultimate plan is to go to medical school although I want to get more hands on experience working with patients. Honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity than to work as an EMT for Aetna. I’m really looking forward to learning all that I can so please feel free to share your wisdom with me. As for interests outside of healthcare, I like languages, traveling, the great outdoors, my dog and making movies with my friends and family.

Camillo Quezada: Part-time EMT. My name is Camilo Quezada and I’m 23 years old. I’m fluent in Spanish and enjoy gaming in my spare time. EMS is my passion and to further my career I have enrolled in Medic class inHartford. I have a great girlfriend who also started working inHartfordand we’ve decided to relocate to the area soon.  I began researching EMS providers in the area and was immediately impressed by Aetna’s reputation. After meeting with the staff and looking around the campus I knew this was a place I could work for many years and be fulfilled. Looking forward to meeting the team and continuing my education.

Angel Rodrigues: Full time EMT. The main reasons why I began a career in EMS is to help others in need, to give back to my community and polish my skills as an EMT-B. I took the EMT course through Hartford Hospital because I’ve heard they’re tough and go in-depth with the material. My mentality is, if you can do it, so can I. And if so, go earn it. I enjoy playing baseball, football, and basketball. I love to go hiking during my days off and swim in the pool. During my down time, I like to sit outside and read. It’s called practicing medicine, and I know that there is no such thing as the “perfect EMT/medic”, but I do want to be on top of the game.

Taylor Salva: Full time Paramedic. I’m a new Paramedic. I graduated from Capital Community College in October of last year. I’ve lived in the New London/Groton area all my life, until my wife, daughter, step daughter and I recently moved to Griswold. I enjoy boating, fishing and shooting. I’ve worked as an EMT basic, a firefighter, and ER technician for some time now and am excited to start my paramedic career.

Mike Weller: Part time EMT. I’m Michael Weller and I’m 24 years old. For the last five years I have been working as a DJ all over Connecticut and New England. I have been slowly transitioning out of the DJ business to focus more on a career in EMS. I originally got my EMT certification and firearms training in order to become a police officer. After several months in the process of looking for a law enforcement job I started working in EMS and I found I really liked it. For a little over a year I have worked at Cromwell Fire Department and I decided it was a good time to commit to the medical field. I am currently enrolled in Hartford Hospital-Goodwin College’s Paramedic program (expected graduation in December ’12) and I have thought about continuing my education to possibly become a CRNA.  I like to snowboard in the winter and mountain bike in the summer and to generally stay as active as possible.  I would describe myself as outgoing and easy to get a long with and I look forward to the new people I will meet at Aetna.

ASM Promotes Three to Field Training Officer (FTO)

MANCHESTER — On April 10, 2012 the Ambulance Service of Manchester (ASM) promoted two from within its EMT ranks to the post of Field Training Officer: Stephanie Boutot and Ray Stovall. FTOs are utilized primarily to train newly hired employees in the performance of their duties as EMTs.
